Meeting 2 January 2014
Weather permitting, this months meeting is a workshop lead by Jean Groom. We are going to decorate the felt flowers made at the November meeting. If you didn't attend that meeting, Jean has some spare felt flowers to decorate so you won't be left out. Please bring
  • The flower/flowers that you made earlier
  • Needles and scissors. If you are going to use fine beads, you will need a beading needle.
  • Threads and beads in suitable colours for your flower/flowers. We will provide a small selection of these.
Optional things to bring
  • Sequins (we will provide some)
  • Thimble if you use one
  • Broach back
  • Light if you have one (with extension cable if it is not battery operated). Don't go out and buy one as we have been told that we can use the ones belonging to the Cross Stitch Group. Lighting to work by was a problem last month so the more lights we have, the better.

The display of members' work and books last month was very successful; so we plan to repeat it. If you have any of the following, please bring them:
  • home made felt (which you have made yourself or purchased)
  • embroidery involving felt (your own or purchased)
  • books on felt making or books showing pictures of embroidery on felt.

Chesterfield Young Embroiderers

We have changed the format of the Young Embroiderers to four meetings a year. They met on Saturday 20 November 2013 for the first time in their new format. The theme was Christmas. The older members made handmade Christmas gift bags and the younger members felt Christmas decorations. The next workshop is on Saturday the 29th of March 2014. The theme is Flowers which has been chosen to tie in with the Kickstart educational programme run by the Guild. The work created at this workshop will go on display.

Meeting 5 December 2013

The theme was 'All That Glitters'; and there were certainly lots of glitter expectant members. We asked members to bring in items they had with beads or sequins on, (either handmade or purchased) to give everyone ideas. The work on display was excellent; a lot of members were envious of the skills demonstrated We were shown some beading and sequin embroidery techniques and then it was a scramble through all the glittery beads, threads and sequins to select those needed to begin a sample piece of embroidery.  Oh and don't forget the handmade chocolates that were simply delicious. We all felt like celebrity divas and there was plenty of chatter on the different tables and plenty of helpful hints to anyone trying beading for the first time. We all went home with work to complete, ready to return with it for display on January 2nd. .

5th December meeting 2013

All that Glitters - Thursday 5 December 2013 We're going to go overboard using bling in embroidery. This will link into the Regional Day competition. We're organising a mini workshop with nibbles. Could you bring sewing scissors fine needles or beading needles if you have these (we will buy a few) (if you are going to use seed beads of the type sold by Mill Hill you will certainly need a beading needle) a small saucer/lid for holding beads etc. (if you can put a piece of felt in it, even better) a bag (without holes) to take home beads and sequins to complete the project at home. beads – the Guild will provide a small selection but not enough for everyone to complete their project so could you bring some from your stash. Optional things to bring sequins and any other embroidery “bling” that you have and might want to use (we will buy sequins for the workshop to supplement what Guild members are donating) thimble (if you use one) if you prefer sewing in a frame, we will be using 6 inch squares of felt if you prefer sewing with backing fabric, backing fabric suitable for use with 6 inch felt squares. If you have any completed embroidery (your own or purchased) using beads or sequins or real/artificial stones or bling, could you bring it so that we have a small display of work to give members ideas for their own future work. Also if you've any books showing beads and sequins being used, could you bring them for members to look at.

Paul Johnson Workshop

On Saturday 7th September 12 guild members and two guests participated in a pop-up book workshop with 'paper-engineer and educator' Paul Johnson an extremely well organised and generous tutor. Everything needed was available, instructions clear and everyone had a Gazebo at the end of a tiring but thoroughly enjoyable day. See the pictures in the slide show to the left; hopefully decorated gazebo's may turn up at the AGM? Participants have all asked for a follow up workshop for a 'Thai Palace' - watch this space.

September meeting

On 5th September Ingrid Karlsson Kemp gave a lovely talk about her work in 'Stories and stitching' reminiscing about childhood, inspirations and journeys in her work. After a few IT blips and lessons learnt, as Ingrid pointed out, we actually started on time! Ingrid uses mixed media to produce pictures with a narrative, weaving words through the images. Often family related the subjects are always close to her heart.

Article sent to Derbyshire Times relating to 'A celebration of stitch' event

Article sent to DT for Thursday's edition.
Sheelagh

On Saturday, the national event  of  'A Celebration of Stitch'  was promoted by a display on the market by the Chesterfield Branch of the Embroiderers' Guild. Three stalls were decorated with splendid examples of members' work over the last year. The opportunity to get hands on was enjoyed by shoppers and passers by, who were drawn by the members who sat and were  creating additional works of art live for all to see. Children as well as adults were willing to have a go.  On display were two group projects, both prize winners in national competitions. The 'Make Do and Mend' hanging by the adult embroiderers which displayed the thirty individual pieces all joined together for a dramatic effect, and the  'Good Hair Day, piece of collective stitching by the Young Embroiderers' of Chesterfield. Anyone who missed the display can see the pictures on our blog at  http://chesterfieldembroiderersguild.blogspot.co.uk/.

The adult group meets once a month on the first Thursday of each month except August at 7.00pm for coffee and biscuits and a natter for a prompt 7.30 pm start for speaker or workshop. We meet at The Saints Parish Rooms, St Mary's Gate Chesterfield S41 7TJ.   We have a mixed bag of meetings with speakers, tutor-led and member-led workshops. Visitors and new members always welcome. The programme for the next year is on the blog as well as how to join in.

Our Young Embroiderers are being re-launched with a Christmas gift themed session on Saturday 30th November. More details will be on the website later. There will be four sessions in the first year on Saturdays at a central location in Chesterfield from 10am - 3pm. See website for details. Junior embroiderers  are welcome to join as well as any  wishing to get involved with their creative side.

We would like to say a great big thank you to all the willing  people who helped us out, from the wonderful Andy and his boys who carried boxes - to the young man on the neighbouring  stall who was thankfully taller than us.  It was much appreciated. Thank you to all and look out for us at next year's 'celebration of Stitch Day.

thanks

4th July with Diane Grant

Thursday 4th July Members enjoyed an inspiring talk by Diane Grant entitled ' My Canvas Work Journey.
Diane is well know in the UK and USA publishing  2 excellent books which entice embroiderers to have a go.
We heard how she spent 20 years developing  American canvas work to a new level, stimulating all to enjoy her passion.
There were lots of wonderful American threads to touch and admire as well as pieces of work. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.

2 websites that have the threads that Diane uses.
Willow fabrics also have magic canvas.

Look out for our stand on Chesterfield Market on the 3rd of August for what will become the annual 'National Needlework Day.'

Workshop with Dionne Swift May 2013

Finalist-13 copyJust days after running a workshop for the guild, Dionne Swift has deservedly been selected as a finalist in the Craft and Design awards 2013.
Dionne taught us screen printing - beginning with positive and negative ideas, overprinting with a background cover using procion dyes. Hard edges were replaced by organic and naturalistic designs, with excellent teaching from Dionne.  Later in the day we experimented with 'manutex monoprinting' to create painterley liberated designs on fabric.

Everyone managed to avoid dye on the carpet! Many thanks to Dionne - an excellent day was had by all and we hope to see some stitched up samples at a guild meeting near you soon.

Friday 8 February 2013

Matt Edwards from Derby City Museums came to run a mini workshop on Japanese stab binding for our Fenruary meeting, and final event at Eastwood Hall.

Matt has a Fine Art background, but discovered book binding whilst at university through RGAP originally based at Derby University.

Bookbinding is the process of fastening together the multiple pages which make up a given book, and covering the result.

Matt talked us through a little of the history and terminology of binding - Forwarders were the serwers and usually female (no surprise there) followed up by the binders (usually male..)
Traditionally, the craft of bookbinding is divided into the areas of forwarding and finishing. Forwarding consists of all the procedures leading up to the decoration of the covers. That is, folding the leaves into pages and gathering into signatures or quires, sewing them together, adding endpapers, attaching boards, and covering. In other words, the binding proper. Finishing is a specialized field involving gold (or blind) tooling, and sometimes inlay and onlay work: the artistic embellishment of the binding.

Caterpillar stitch

Here is a tutorial for a bookbinding stitch - 10 minutes - if you manage it lets see the results next meeting!

7th February Meeting 2013

Bookbinding with Matt Edwards

In this session there will be a brief introduction to both traditional and craft bookbinding techniques by looking at some examples of Matt's own work.

There will also be an opportunity to produce a simple Japanese bound notebook. This traditional binding technique is one of the earliest book forms.  It was created in Japan to resolve the problem of having to roll and re-roll long paper scrolls. This is a sewing technique that has many decorative possibilities.

You need to bring: Scissors & Sewing needles

Matt will supply: Paper,  Card, Threads
Some decorative off -cuts just in case we have time at the end of the session to decorate the cover.

You may have an idea in mind for your own work, if so bring it along.

Matt trained as a conservation bookbinder following a degree fine art.  While restoring books of antiquity he also creates a variety of unique artists’ bindings.

This will be the last session at Eastwood Hall and Barbara will give details out of our future venue.
